The car's heater resistor has the function of regulating the fan settings. The lower the supply of the air from the fan, the more resistance is supplied to the air flow. If the fan is on speed one, less air flow needs to be supplied than in speed four. In short, the heater resistance is necessary to regulate the amount of hot and cold air in the car. Heater resistor broken

Over time, the heater resistor can break or work less well. When the heater resistor is broken, this can be noticed by the fan speeds. Certain fan settings will no longer work (properly) in this case. The blowing force will also decrease or even stop working in a certain position. For example, it does it in positions one and four, but not in positions two and three. It can also happen that the heater resistor no longer works at all. In this case all positions of the fan will no longer exert any blowing force and you will have to replace this part.

Replace heater resistor

The car's heater resistor is usually located under the dashboard next to the pollen filter. It is advisable to remove the pollen filter when replacing the heater resistor. In this way you have a good view of the room in which the heater resistor is located. In some vehicles there is also an air hose to the glove compartment. You can push this aside to reach the resistance properly. You can remove the old heater resistor by turning it a quarter turn to the left. After removing the heater resistor, the power strip can also be disconnected. By shining a flashlight into the housing from below, it becomes visible where the new heater resistor should be placed. After placing the new resistor, the power strip can be reconnected and the air hose can be correctly placed again. Replacing the heater resistor takes about half a day.

A defect in the heater resistor is often the result of a heavy running fan motor. It is therefore advisable to replace the fan motor when replacing the heater resistor, which is also called the heater fan motor.
